The Orthodox Wake

Following the burial the family usually provides refreshments. Traditionally this commences with a shot of brandy or a Greek coffee as mourners enter the function venue, accompanied by bread, olives, cheese and paximathia (dry unsweetened biscuits).

Some families now prefer a fuller meal of fish, potatoes, salad, cheese, olives, bread and traditional savoury pastries spanakopita and tyropita, accompanied by wine. Some families provide these refreshments at the graveside following burial.

The Victoria Funerals Chapel was officially consecrated by 14 Greek and Serbian Orthodox priests and is an approved venue for priests to conduct the Prayers and Viewing (Trisagion) on the evening before the Orthodox funeral service.

Using the Victoria Funerals Chapel as a venue for the Viewing (Trisagion) gives families the opportunity to deliver eulogies, play music, display photos and show video tributes in celebration of the deceased’s life, all of which are not permitted in the Orthodox Church in Australia.

Victoria Funerals conducts the majority of Greek Orthodox funerals in Melbourne. Chris and Maria are often seen in the midst of the Greek Orthodox community that has come to know them and respect them, as they participate in and sponsor Church festivals and fundraisers.
